Margot Robbie's Hairstylist Just Recommended This New Hair Product to Me

When it comes to hair, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to caring for it. Curly hair will require different products to fine strands, and you might need more tools at your disposal to style a blunt bob than you would for a low-maintenance shag style. However, there are a couple of things that seem to be universal when it comes to haircare: We all want to keep it feeling healthy, looking full and generally sticking around for as long as possible. In fact, searches around hair loss and how to get thicker hair are at an all-time high right now with all of us keen to get our strands in tip-top condition as we head back into the salon for those all-important post-lockdown haircuts.

So when celebrity stylist Kylee Heath revealed to me that she was currently obsessed with a product specially designed to care for our scalps, I knew I had to try it for myself. After all, with a client list including the likes of Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, Rashida Jones and Billie Eilish, she's an expert who knows a thing or two about making hair look good.

Heath is the mastermind behind Margot Robbie's low-maintenance bun.

The product in question? Frank Body Exfoliating Scalp Serum (£17), a rinse-out treatment that gently sloughs away dead skin cells, removes product build-up and generally promotes a healthy scalp, which in turn leads to stronger strands, less breakage and healthier-looking hair.

Why is scalp-care so important?

I love Awkwafina's sleek, side-parted Met Gala look by Heath.

"Well, it really is a no-brainer to me," says Heath. "We indulge in body oils and creams, and I use like 10 products for my face. Our scalps have been neglected. I am so excited that there has been more of a focus on scalp health recently. I personally get dry scalp toward the nape of my neck and sometimes around my parting. It needs exfoliation and hydration just like the rest of our skin. I see a lot of dandruff and build-up on clients, and it’s nice that we have access to great scalp products like Frank Body.

"I love them as a brand—their cheeky marketing, I love that it’s a women-founded and -run business and that they were friends with an idea! They make quality products at prices that are accessible. And I just love and use pretty much all of their products. They’re well-thought-out and naturally sourced."

What advice do you have for people currently dealing with flaky, itchy scalps?

Heath's pixie-cut styling looks so good on Kristen Stewart.

"Don’t sleep with wet hair," advises Heath "Treat your scalp with care like you do the rest of your body. Exfoliate and hydrate. Over-washing can cause dryness as well, so try to cut back."

Are there any protective hairstyles that you love for preventing scalp irritation?

I adore Heath's finishing touch to Laura Dern's ponytail.

"I have been loving using Frank Body scalp serum as an overnight treatment," explains Heath. "When I know I am going to wash my hair in the morning, I apply the serum throughout my scalp, French braid it, and sleep, then wash it out after my morning workout.

"Another hot tip for day-two hair: I apply the scalp serum and add a small amount of hair mask, starting at the roots and using excess throughout my ends. I then create a centre parting and slick my hair into a low ponytail. I sometimes braid the ponytail and leave it down or twist it into a bun. Then I am treating my hair while having a pretty hairstyle!"

How do you always get your celebrity clients' hair looking so healthy?

Heath excels in healthy hair—Sofia Boutella's bob looks so shiny.

"Thank you! I always prep the hair before creating any style," explains Heath. "This usually includes adding some product and blowing it out first. This helps to create longevity in the style and also smooths out the cuticle first. I love using thermal protection on my clients and any serums they may need. It’s important to recommend any products to my clients that I think will help their hair thrive."
