'Firefly Lane' Book Reveals Why Tully & Kate End Their Friendship (Spoilers)

SPOILER ALERT – Do not continue reading this post if you haven’t finished Firefly Lane, unless you don’t mind spoilers!

The new series Firefly Lane has been number one on Netflix since its debut a few days ago and the first season ends with a burning question: what happened with Tully and Kate, and why aren’t they friends any longer?

The show jumped around the timeline throughout the entire season and some scenes hinted that Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) aren’t friends in the future. We finally learned in the final moments of the season finale that Kate never wants to see Tully again.

“No one wants you here,” Kate told Tully at her dad’s funeral. “When I said I could never forgive you for what you did, what did you think that meant?”

So, what happened between them? We won’t find out until season two, but if you read the book, you already know what happened.

There are some big differences between the book and the TV series. One of those differences is that Kate and her husband Johnny (Ben Lawson) never get divorced in the book and Tully is part of a love triangle with them.

In the book, Johnny and Kate get married after she gets pregnant with their daughter Marah. They end up having two more children in the book and Kate is constantly insecure about their relationship because of Johnny’s obvious attraction to Tully.

So, how does the friendship between Tully and Kate end?

In the book (like in the TV show), Kate has a rocky relationship with her daughter Marah, so Tully decides she wants to help fix things between them.

Tully invites the mother-daughter duo onto her show The Girlfriend Hour, while Johnny is still working there as a producer, to discuss their relationship. When they sit down for the interview, Tully ambushes them with something they didn’t sign up for.

“Today we’re talking about overprotective mothers and the teenage daughters who hate them,” Tully says while introducing the segment. Kate is called a “controlling” and “domineering” mother by a psychologist on the show. Kate is obviously betrayed by what happened and pulls Marah off stage. Johnny quits the show. And the friendship is over.

Katherine Heigl spoke to OprahMag.com to share her thoughts on that part of the book, which we haven’t seen yet in the series. She said, “Tully was trying to help but in a really thoughtless way that was all about Tully. She doesn’t realize that she’s publicly humiliating her friend on live television, and at the same time, taking the 14-year-old’s side. That would be enough to put a serious rift in the friendship.”

The friends do reconcile their relationship years later when something tragic happens…

Kate is diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer and Tully rushes to be with her in the hospital after she learns the news. They repair their relationship and before she dies, Kate tells Johnny that he can be with Tully, but he reassures her that he never loved her and it was only ever a one-night stand.

Kate asks Tully to watch over her family and to tell her kids about their friendship.
