In hindsight, it should have been utterly predictable that Ugg boots would make a comeback at the same time a pandemic forced us to remain indoors.

Of course the comfy noughties staple comes back with a vengeance just as a desire for comfort above all else takes the fashion world by storm.

After all, no one on Zoom can tell if you’re wearing red bottoms. Unless you tell them, your group chat will have no idea that you’ve got what basically amount to outside-appropriate slippers on your feet.

When the only reasons we’ve got to put on clothes are to take out the bins, pop to the shop or go for our allocated daily walks – it’s winter to boot – it’s understandable that people would opt for the cosiest, softest options they can find.

Enter the Ugg boot – rounded, warm, light-weight, fleece-lined sheepskin shoes most commonly seen in brown or black and roughly 15 years ago.

At least that used to be the case. Now, celebs like Kia Gerber, Irina Shayk, Emily Ratajkowski, Joan Smalls, Gigi Hadid and more have all been papped wearing Uggs in the last year or so – with the most popular option seemingly being variations of the brand’s mini boot.

Indeed, the Q4 Lyst Index – which takes into account Lyst shopper behaviour, Google search data, social media mentions and ‘engagement statistics’ all over the globe – has Ugg’s Classic Ultra Mini Boots down as the fifth ‘hottest’ women’s product in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Meanwhile, the Ugg’s Scuff Deco slippers came in third in the list for men.

How to wear Ugg boots in 2021

If you’ve got a pair of your very own, you probably won’t want to wear Ugg boots to anything formal once we get the chance to do that kind of thing again.

Weddings, funerals, bar mitzvahs, job interviews – all of these and similar things are probably off the table.

These boots were made more for chill days hanging out with your friends or casual dates with your significant other – maybe strolling around a shopping centre, going to the cinema, or hitting up your local pub.

For a laid-back-yet-chic look, try pairing muted-coloured Uggs with similarly muted maxi skirt or dress that just lets the toes of the shoes poke through.

If you want to take things up a notch, you could try that look in monochrome.

You could also try wearing Uggs with either leggings or black tights and a black mini skirt with a hoodie or sweatshirt.

Kaia Gerber’s method of wearing white socks under short chestnut Uggs and over black leggings looks super cute and mutes the colour clash of black and brown.

You might be able to get away with wearing Ugg boots to work if they’re low-key and your office has more of a chill dress code.

If you want to dress them up a bit for the workplace, the easiest option is probably a mostly black ensemble, with black Uggs, bottoms of some kind and a black blazer.

Channelling Emily Ratajkowski by choosing a leather blazer can add another chic and trendy texture to the outfit.

Office Uggs would also pair well with an equally comfy turtle-neck knitted dress. Pair with statement earrings to elevate the look.
